Working Weekends

It takes an enormous amount of work to keep the campsite open. All of this work is carried out by volunteers at working days. If you would like to volunteer, or receive more information about working days, please contact servicecrew@abingtoncampsite.org.uk. Several working days took place during 2011.

News of What Volunteers have Done

April 2010

The Site Spring Clean on 17th/18th April saw several projects completed, including the seating around the campfire.

November 2009

Network, Explorers and Leaders from the county spent a rather chilly weekend working on the site. Several dead trees were felled, a skip full of rubbish was removed from the buildings and surrounding areas, and a good start was made to the second tier of the campfire circle. The large fallen tree that has divided Birch camping area for a good few years was removed, creating a much larger camping area. Large sections of the fence along the boundary of the site were repaired, and the wardens' room refurbishment was finally finished. One of the volunteers has written about the experience here (click to download the report).

[Volunteers used diggers, moved fallen trees, and shared a meal.]

September 2009

After a swarm of bees nested in the ceiling, and a leaky tap caused the floor to collapse, it was decided to renovate the wardens' room. A new floor was laid, the ceiling was replaced, the room was given a fresh coat of paint, and some new plumbing was fitted.

November 2008

Milton Explorer Scouts have refurbished the Training Room, replacing the dark walls with a lighter colour to give the room a more welcoming feel. They have also erected a portion of fencing along the river to prevent campers from falling in.
